Materials Science Lab

Introduction to the Lab

Materials Science Lab contributes mainly to teaching activities and senior design project (SDP) activities in the Mechanical Engineering Department. It provides support in wide range of specialized areas of materials characterization and testing to students. This includes:

·Microstructure characterization using metallography techniques which includes abrasive cutting, sample mounting, grinding wheels, polishing wheels, etching and metallurgical microscopes. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) fitted with Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) is also available for higher microstructure resolution and chemical analysis

·Mechanical Testing which includes hardness tester, Microhardness tester, universal tensile testing machine for tensile, compression, shear and bending tests. The lab also includes impact testing for toughness measurement.

·Heat treatment which includes heating furnace.

Courses supported include:

ME 202, ME205 and ME415.
